Installation

To install this demo you need to perform the following actions:

	- Copy the file AutoArk to the SYSTEM.SETUP folder on your boot disk.
	- Copy the file UM.Icons to the ICONS folder on your boot disk.
	- Reboot your system.

That's it! AutoArk will load and becom active after the system finishes booting!

Brief Overview

AutoArk installs as an INIT and thus must reside in the System.Setup folder. Once installed, its primary interface is via Finder 6.0's Extras menu. The interface is very intuitive - click an icon and choose what you want to do to it from the Extras menu. You can compress/encrypt/expand one file, multiple files or entire folders. Once compressed, a files icon should change to the AA icon indicating it is in archive format. To gain information on what is contained within an archive, click its icon and select Archive Info from the Extras menu. You can launch a compressed application/document by simply double-clicking it.

To change several options associated with AutoArk, choose Configure AutoArk from the Extras menu. In addition to controlling the way AutoArk manipulates archives, you can assign keyboard equivalents to the each item in the Extras menu. You can also assign different compressors to be used for specific filetypes.

When within an application, you should have normal access to your documents even if they are compressed. These documents should appear in a GetFile dialog just as they always have. If you select a compressed file, it will be expanded before it is loaded into your application. Expanded documents will recompress when you return to Finder.

If at any time you decide you dont want AutoArk to be active, simply hold the A key down while booting the system.

UniverseMaster Note

It is not a cool idea to use UniverseMaster v1.01 or earlier with AutoArk. Problems will only occur when performing an operation with UM that results in a file getting decompressed e.g. a file restore. The problem is that UM and AutoArk are both dealing with the same file format and thus AutoArk will expand archives before UM opens them. This leads to interresting results (no crashes, just interresting). On top of that, AutoArk creates version 1 archives where UM 1.01 creates version 0 archives. Thus any file compressed by AutoArk is unreadable by UM 1.01. The 1.02 UM is going out soon and it corrects all of these problems.
